Marine memorial sculptor dies

Felix de Weldon, famous for his Marine Corps War Memorial, died in June at 96 in Woodstock, Va. Some 100 million visitors have seen the memorial since it was dedicated in 1954.
During his career, de Weldon created approximately 2,000 public sculptures, including three monuments in 44 of the 50 states and one of Adm. Richard E. Byrd on Antarctica.
De Weldon served as a Navy combat artist stationed at Patuxent River Naval Air Station, Md., during WWII.
