Korean War remains returned

VFW Magazine, Oct, 2002

The remains of what are believed to be seven U.S. soldiers killed in the Korean War were repatriated in August. The Army's Central Identification Laboratory in Hawaii is now trying to identify them.

U.S. search teams recovered six sets of remains near the Chosin Reservoir, the site of battles in November and December 1950 that pitted the 1st Marine Division and elements of the Army's 7th Infantry Division against Chinese forces. Pentagon officials say the Chosin Reservoir area could yield some 1,000 sets of remains.

Searchers found the seventh set along the Chongchon River near the border of Unsan and Kujang counties about 60 miles north of Pyongyang. In November 1950, the 1st Cavalry and 25th Infantry divisions fought Chinese forces there.

Since 1996, U.S. search teams have recovered 159 sets of remains, 13 of which have been identified.
