VFW Chief welcomed home to California: as is VFW tradition, the incoming Chief is feted in his home state. Ray Sisk was honored in Ontario, Calif., in September. On hand were long-time supporters of veterans
VFW Magazine, Dec, 2002 by Bill Smith
At a banquet held at the DoubleTree Hotel in Ontario, Calif., 400 VFW Department and national officers and guests paid tribute to Ray Sisk, the fourth Californian to hold this, high office. Among the distinguished guests were Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony Principi and the renowned actor Mickey Rooney.
Principi praised VFW and its members for their dedicated service to veterans and the nation. He reminded those present that today the flag of service is being carried by a new generation of Americans in uniform.
Terming the new VFW leader a "veteran's veteran," the VA secretary noted Sisk's affinity for the American eagle. He compared an eagle's willingness to fly through a storm with Sisk's conviction to take on the challenges of a storm in working for veterans.
Principi welcomed Sisk's leadership, patriotism and friendship "as we work together for the best possible service to our men and women who have served our nation in uniform."
Actor Mickey Rooney, hailed by the VA secretary for his work with the USO, spoke briefly to the attendees. He proudly displayed the homecoming shirt emblazoned with an eagle and flag and the Sisk motto of "Service, Honor, Pride."
(Editor's Note: Mickey Rooney served with the Army's 6817th Special Services Battalion, entertaining troops in France on the front lines. He served from June 1944 to March 1946.)
