Ia Drang Valley: the whole story

VFW Magazine, Jan, 2004

"1st Cav and NVA Tangle in the Ia Drang Valley" (November) by Al Hemingway omitted a few facts. As a replacement in 2nd Plt., B Co., 1st Bn., 7th Cav, I was at LZ X-Ray in November 1965. Lt. Rick Rescorla's company of the 2nd Battalion departed X-Ray and bravely returned to LZ Albany in a nighttime assault. Also, elements of the 5th Cavalry took part in both LZ battles.

This article provided an excellent overview of the Battle of Ia Dang Valley, but the statement attributed to Gen. Westmoreland is incorrect. It was after the Plei Me camp was relieved that Westmoreland ordered the 1st Cav Division to "do more than merely contain the enemy; he must be sought out and destroyed." I was a senior adviser to the II ARVN Corps at Pleiku at the time.
