VFW Magazine, Feb, 2004

By the end of November, the number of soldiers evacuated from Iraq was nearly 11,000, according to Pentagon figures obtained by United Press International. The 10,854 evacuations were for both hostile and non-hostile causes.

Specifically, between March 19 and Nov. 30, the Army Medical Command reported: 2,273 wounded in battle; 3,843 non-battle injuries; and 4,738 cases of disease. As of Nov. 30, the Pentagon reported 457 troops had died.

The 8,581 medical evacuations for non-hostile causes were for both "serious and not-so-serious" problems, according to Army Medical Command spokesman Jaime Cavazos. They include bone injuries, surgeries, brain problems, heart illness and mental problems.
