VFW members continue to give: in towns across the nation, VFW Posts can be found working for the betterment of their communities

VFW Magazine, Feb, 2004

VFW members are known for their generosity and concern for those in need. It seems some Posts have become synonymous with the oft-used phrase "community service."

A fine example comes out of Rahway, N.J., home of Post 681. When member Robert Borst found out about a need at the Menlo Park VA Medical Center, he went to his fellow members for support. Between his Post and the area Marine Corps League, more than $3,500 was raised to purchase a Basic Viva machine.

The exercise machine includes leg guides, an arm trainer and tetra handles. Best of all, it can be used by patients who are confined to wheelchairs.

Last October, Viera VA Clinic in Melbourne, Fla., also benefited from VFW's generous spirit. For more than $2,500, Post 3991 members purchased a golf cart to transport patients to and from their vehicles. According to Ray Jarvis, Jr., commander, the money was already in place so there was no fund-raising necessary.

Members of Post 941 in Shelby County, Iowa, contributed to their community in a very visible way. They donated more than $20,000 toward the purchase of a new marquee for the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Harlan. The marquee will list special announcements and publicize events taking place at the auditorium.

Funds for this project came from the sale of the Post borne. Members will now hold meetings in the auditorium.
