Corpsmen—heroes of the day

VFW Magazine, March, 2003

"First Aid Under Fire" (January) by Gary Turbak was on the mark. This was the first time I have read anything about the fight for Vegas. I served with E Co., 2nd Bn., 7th Marines that March 1953. And I can still smell the smoke, see the dead, envision the flares overhead and hear the ceaseless mortar and machine gun fire. Corpsmen had to work under these horrendous conditions.

I have read with interest all of the magazine's articles on the Korean War. While it is true that ground troops paid a great price in Korea, Navy destroyers provided them with invaluable support. Shore batteries and mines damaged 12 destroyers, causing 185 U.S. casualties.

Please let me compliment the magazine for a really great job of keeping its members informed.
