$250 VA enrollment fee proposed
VFW Magazine, April, 2003 by Tim Dyhouse
Two groups of veterans could be charged to enroll in VA's health care system next year if an Administration proposal is approved in VA's budget.
Veterans in VA's categories 7 (those who do not have a service-connected injury) and 8 (those without a service-connected injury and who earn more than $29,576 a year) would be required to pay an annual $250 VA enrollment fee. None of the other categories of patients would be assessed the fee.
The Administration proposal estimates the new fee could generate $230 million in revenues. VA Secretary Anthony Principi said the fee would help target care to the poorest and sickest of VA's 6.8 million patients. Currently, more than 200,000 VA patients are waiting for care.
