Civilian valor in Vietnam
VFW Magazine, May, 2002 by John (American novelist) Hopkins
War correspondent Joe Galloway (see February story on the movie about the Ia Drang Valley battle) was not the only civilian to be recognized for heroism in Vietnam. Gerald L. Dunn, a former Marine who served there in 1967-68, earned the Bronze Star with "V" device as a civilian technical adviser.
As an employee of the Federal Electric Corp., Dunn was advising the South Vietnamese 610th Signal Battalion in March 1972. While at Quang Tri, he led troops to safety, being wounded in a firefight during the Easter Offensive.
