A website for G.I.R.L.S - Girl Wise

Melpomene Journal, Fall-Winter, 2002

Girls today may have lots of websites to choose from -- but how many offer accurate information on physical activity's impact on their health? That's why Melpomene created GirlWise, an adjunct to our website that offers young girls expert advice from a board-certified pediatrician, as well as interactive games, activities and information on everything from mental and physical health to safety, drugs and sexual health.

Girl Wise is a website for G.I.R.L.S. (Guiding Individuals for Real Success) that grew out of focus groups with girls, ages 9-13, who participated in Melpomene's InnerActive Program. The girls told Melpomene staffers their most pressing concerns and questions -- and the site was born. Girl Wise provides information, motivation and inspiration to girls wanting to know more about:

* personal health issues such as hygiene, body development and skin care;

* how good nutrition helps your body grow and gives you the energy to be active;

* the dangers of having an unhealthy body image;

* how including physical activity into your life can give you the confidence to say no to drugs and alcohol;

* tips on staying safe while playing hard;

* ways to improve your mental health and how to spot real mental illness;

* how physical activity can boost self-esteem;

* how to start and maintain a physical activity program that is fun; and much more!

In addition, a Phenomenal Female is profiled each month as a role model. And Dr. Claudia Fox, a pediatrician, provides answers to questions of concern to preteen and adolescent girls.

GirlWise was funded in part by the Kate Risley Foundation and the Edwards Memorial Trust. To learn more about Girl Wise and Melpomene's InnerActive Program, visit our website at www.melpomene.org or www.melpomene.org/girlwise/girlwise.htm.>
