IN THE NEWS: It was touch and go for Baylor University (TX) President Robert Sloan, whose Leadership was called into question this summer. In the end, the regents decided he could keep his job. Their decision came in mid-September, after Sloan and Baylor endured weeks of scandal surrounding the murder of basketball player Patrick Dennehy.

Initially, an athletics coach tried to paint Dennehy as a drug dealer, thus explaining his untimely death. Further investigation, however, yielded another player as a murder suspect and revealed NCAA illegal payment violations in the Baylor basketball program. After the coach resigned, the attention turned to Sloan. The faculty took a "no confidence" vote on his Leadership, and several key regents--and famous Baylor alum former Gov.
