After a five-month search, University of Iowa regents selected David Skorton to fill the vacancy created when President Mary Sue Coleman left to head up the University of Michigan. He'll be paid $281,875 annually to tackle the challenges created by two years of state budget cuts and rising tuition rates.
Skorton had been serving as interim vice president of External Relations at U Iowa since 2002 and has been a faculty member there since 1980. While the president's position at Iowa is seen as a stepping stone to more prestigious universities (think about Coleman's career path), Skorton, 53, says he will finish out his higher ed career here.
