This month, Robert E. Witt, 62, becomes president of the University of Alabama. He was formerly president of the University of Texas-Arlington. When he visited UA's Tuscaloosa campus in January for one of his final interviews he outlined his goals as follows: to aggressively recruit new students, generate more revenue for the school, and emphasize core academics.

He also said he favored a review of faculty members, even after they earned tenure--an idea not popular with all professors there ...
