Vice Adm. John Ryan will be the acting chancellor of the State University of New York system, replacing Robert King, chancellor for the past 5.5 years, who steps down on June 1. Ryan is currently president of SUNY's Maritime Academy. His appointment follows somewhat of a tumultuous time for SUNY.
King, a friend of Gov. George Pataki, had announced some months ago that he would take a sabbatical from the chancellor's role, but not officially step down. SUNY officials were reportedly disappointed in his decision. Further, critics were upset with King's agreement, which called for him to receive $170,000 in compensation during his sabbatical. King now becomes acting president and a professor at SUNY Postsdam ...
