University of California - Appointed And Promoted

University Business, July, 2003 by Jean Marie Angelo

Part scientist and researcher and part education enthusiast, Robert Dynes is seen as the candidate with just the right temperament to take the presidency at the University of California system. Dynes, 60, who will succeed Richard Atkinson when he steps down October 1, began as a physics professor at UC San Diego in 1991 and became chancellor at San Diego just five years later.

He is known for his people skills and high energy. (At San Diego, he invited students to run a 5K road race each year, donating $25 to a scholarship fund for each student who finished ahead of him.).
