Prairie View A&M University (TX) is not considered in the same league as other historically black IHEs, such as Florida A&M U and North Carolina A&T State U. Officials want to change that perception and have given George Wright the authority to do it. Wright, who became president in June, will help expand the engineering and architecture programs and also boost faculty morale, which hit a low earlier this year when former President Charles Hines Laid off faculty and accused one scholar of misusing grant funding.

The professor was ultimately vindicated, but the school remained steeped in malaise. Wright, according to some, will be viewed by instructors as an insider. He comes to Prairie by way of faculty positions at U of Texas at Austin and Duke U.
