TORONTO -- Shelternet.ca opened as a website that links shelters for abused women and children across Canada.
The website was created by a group of anti-violence workers. The aim is to connect women to their local shelter and support shelters in using the internet. The website offers:
* A clickable map of Canada with links to shelters,
* Safety plans,
* Questions and answers about shelters and abuse,
* A secured area for shelters to share resources,
* No charge website development and hosting for shelters,
* A research project that evaluates on-line information and support (on-line counselling).

The $250,000 project is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Culture and Recreation and a number of corporate sponsors.
Janet Richardson is the Managing Director. The only other web for shelters is hotpeaches.org operated by the Saskatchewan Association of Transition Houses.
