Quebec introduces new child tax credit

Community Action, Sept 20, 2004

QUEBEC, PC -- Quebec will introduce a new refundable tax credit for child assistance in January 2005. The tax credit will be paid directly to families and will have two components: a child assistance payment and a supplement for handicapped children. The new measure will replace the current family allowance tax credit for dependent children and tax reduction for families.

The tax credit applies to children under 18 years who usually live with a parent or parents and whose care and education is the responsibility of the parents who must file a Quebec income tax return.

The amounts paid will be $2,000 for the first child and $1,500 for each additional child to a maximum of $5,500, A monthly supplement for handicapped children of 119.22$ can be added to the assistance payment, regardless of family income.

Single-parent families will be entitled to a minimum supplement of $276.00, which will be added to their basic child assistance amount. Payments will be made four times a year.
