Yonge Street Mission: 100 years

Community Action, Sept 20, 2004

TORONTO -- The Yonge Street Mission, now called Evergreen Centre for Street Youth, marks its 100th anniversary.

Starting as a "Gospel Wagon" providing material aid to poor families, Evergreen has five sites in the downtown area, offering health and social services to street youths.

The agency has operated continuously at a site on Yonge near the bustling Dundas street intersection for more than 100 years. The current Yonge street site is in the midst of a high pedestrian traffic area, whose neighbours include retail stores, strip joints and porno shops.
