Yukon tests telecounselling in remote community

Community Action, Oct 25, 2004

WHITEHORSE -- The residents of Watson Lake are now able to access alcohol and drug counselling weekly via a new telehealth program announced today by Health and Social Services Minister Peter Jenkins.

The six-month pilot project will link an addictions counsellor in Whitehorse with clients in Watson Lake one afternoon each week.

The counsellor providing services for the next six months visited Watson Lake this week to host two information sessions on the telehealth project, one for adults and one for youth, as well as an open house at the telehealth room located in the Watson Lake Hospital.

The counsellor may also travel to Watson Lake several times during the course of the pilot project to meet personally with clients.

The service can also provide after care support for individuals who have gone through treatment, as well as counselling.

The telehealth network is used by community health nurses and other allied health professionals to provide a variety of services including counselling and medical referrals.
