Shelburne youth centre will close

HALIFAX -- Nova Scotia will close the Shelburne Youth Centre on April 1. The youth offender facility had been the focus of a sexual abuse scandal; one-staff member is now serving a prison sentence. Only two youths now live on the campus. They will be transferred to a larger facility.

The centre that once housed 120 youths was downsized to 24 beds in 2001. Most of the youths had come from the Metro Halifax area. The centre had started out as a naval facility and was converted to a juvenile training school following World War II.
