Quebec eyes care in mental health

Community Action, Feb 16, 2004

MONTREAL -- Quebec's Ministry of Health has assigned investigators to provincial mental health facilities to check conditions following incidents of abuse and substandard care in recent months. Minister of Health Philippe Couillard rejected advocates calls for a broader inquiry. Couillard said that it would be expensive and unnecessary.

A coalition of 35 local mental health advocacy groups, LAssociation des groupes dintervention en difense de droits en santi mentale du Quebec (AGIDD-SMQ), have provided the Ministry of Health with a list of urgent measures that they want to see implemented, including a moratorium on new housing in public health institutions, until an accreditation process is established.
