BC may be planning to cut 9,000 from disability benefits, documents show

Community Action, April 14, 2003

VICTORIA -- Opposition Leader Joy MacPhail produced a ministry document that said "The ministry expects that about 9,130 disability clients--20 percent of the caseload will not meet the new criteria." MacPhail has been demanding that Human Resources Minister Murray Coell account for his "review" of 19,000 people in receipt of disability benefits. Coell refused to respond to questions of how many people he expected to have their benefits reduced.

This month the Ministry increased the earnings exemption allowing persons with disabilities to keep a portion of their after tax employment income. The exemption was increased from $200 to $300. The exemptions apply to employment income and employment insurance benefits.
