Mary: Images of the Mother of Jesus in Jewish and Christian Perspective

Currents in Theology and Mission, August, 2006 by Craig L. Nessan

Mary: Images of the Mother of Jesus in Jewish and Christian Perspective by Jaroslav Pelikan, David Flusser, and Justin Lang (Fortress, $17) offers ecumenical perspectives on how Mary has been depicted over the centuries, with special reference to artistic renderings. A companion to Pelikan's more elaborate Mary Through the Centuries (Yale, 1996), this book is adorned with 48 color plates.

It includes interpretive essays by each of the authors, contrasting Jewish (Flusser) and varied Christian views (Pelikan and Lang) on Mary's significance. A beautiful book, fitting as a gift. CLN
