Shirley Ann Vereen Gore, PhD, APRN, BC, endowed university professor and chairperson of the Department of Graduate Nursing Education in the School of Nursing at Hampton University, Hampton, Virginia passed away on Friday, February 7, 2003 at Riverside Medical Center in Newport News, Virginia. Dr. Gore was born on September 14, 1948 in Columbus County, North Carolina, attended elementary school in Fair Bluff, North Carolina and graduated from high school in Chadbourn, North Carolina. She subsequently earned a diploma from the Lincoln Hospital School of Nursing in Durham, North Carolina, a BS degree from Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, North Carolina and in 1990 earned a second BS degree from Barton College in Wilson, North Carolina. In 1992, she earned a MSN degree and in 1996, a PhD degree from the University of North Carolina--Chapel Hill. Dr. Gore completed post-doctoral studies in nursing theory and research at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Gore's professional career spanned 34 years of dedicated service. As a nurse and an educator, she was committed to improving the quality of life for all individuals regardless of their background or station in life. She held a variety of positions from staff nurse, supervisor, nurse practitioner and educator, holding the ranks of instructor through professor. Under Dr. Gore's capable leadership, the pediatric nurse practitioner and the women's health nurse practitioner programs were added to the curricular offering of the master's degree program at Hampton University. In addition, under her leadership, the first Doctor of Philosophy degree in Nursing in a historically Black college or university was begun.

Dr. Gore published extensively and was one of the early members of the Association of Black Nursing Faculty, Incorporated.

A memorial service was held at the Hampton University Memorial Church on Wednesday, February 12, 2003. The family of Dr. Gore announced the establishment of the "Dr. Shirley V. Gore Memorial Scholarship," an endowed fund for the education of graduate nursing students. For more information contact: Ms. Karen Brown, Office of Development at 757/727-5356.
