ABNF Journal, The, Sept-Oct, 2002

Betty Adams, PhD, dean of the School of Nursing at Prairie View A&M University in Houston, Texas was the keynote speaker for the 14th Annual Meeting & Scientific Conference held July 24-28, 2002 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Dr. Adams spoke on "Infusing Technological Advances into Nursing Through Strategic Partnerships."

Marsha Atkins, ND, CNM; Gwenneth Simmonds, PhD; Margaret T. Beard, PhD; and Sallie Tucker-Allen, PhD, FAAN have been appointed to serve on the ABNF Task Force to respond to the Call to the Nursing Profession objective to increase the number of African American nursing faculty members and students in schools of nursing. Any ABNF member wishing to join the Task Force may call Dr. Tucker-Allen at 630/969-3809.

Hattie Bessent, PhD, FAAN, first honorary member of ABNF, received an honorary doctorate of science degree from Hunter College at the 2002 graduation for her stellar efforts in developing "a cadre of highly qualified specialists ... in mental health and the behavioral sciences ... dedicated to working with minority populations." Congratulations, Dr. Bessent.

Janice Brewington, PhD, FAAN, has been appointed assistant provost at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Barbara Broome, PhD, was recently appointed to the position of assistant dean of the School of Nursing t the University of South Alabama and will also serve as chair of the Department of Community/Mental Health. Dr. Broome presented "Developing and Implementing a Model for Online Nursing Education" at the 14th Annual Meeting & Scientific Conference of ABNF.

Rhetaugh Graves Dumas, PhD, FAAN, honorary member of ABNF, will be honored as a Living Legend at a reception sponsored by the American Academy of Nursing to be held on Thursday, October 31, 2002 in Naples, Florida. Dr. Dumas will be honored for her visionary leadership, contributions to the nursing profession and influence on health care policy and practice.

Barbara Forte-Conner, MSN, a faculty member at Kennedy-King College and Stephanie Lanfair, MSN, Chair of the Department of Nursing at Kennedy-King College in Chicago, Illinois presented "Illinois Online Network" at the 14th Annual Meeting and Scientific Conference held in Las Vegas, Nevada from July 24-28, 2002.

Phyllis D. Henderson, PhD, first graduate of the Hampton University PhD in Nursing program, received the ABNF Dissertation Award for 2002, which was presented to Dr. Henderson with a $300.00 check. Dr. Bertha L. Davis served as chair of Dr. Henderson's dissertation committee.

Loretta Sweet Jemmott, PhD, FAAN, associate professor and director of the Center for Urban Health Research at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing received the Exemplary Substance Abuse Prevention Award for the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention.

Gloria J. McNeal, PhD, assistant professor and project director of the acute care nurse practitioner track at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, has received the Paul Robeson Faculty Excellence Award for contributions to the academic life, development and aspirations of students at Rutgers.

Mamie C. Montague, PhD, FNP-BC, FAAN and Geraldine Brown, PhD, have been appointed co-editors of the Minority Nurse Newsletter for 2002-2004.

Janice Phillips, PhD, FAAN, program director at the National Institute of Nursing Research, published an article with Patricia A. Grady, PhD, FAAN, entitled, "Reducing Health Disparities in the Twenty-first Century: Opportunities for Nursing Research" in Nursing Outlook, May/June 2002 issue.

Sandra J. Picot, PhD, associate professor and Sonya Ziporkin Gershowitz Chair at the University of Maryland was first author of "Engaging African American Elders and Caregivers in Urban Communities in Health Research" which appeared in the Journal of Gerontological Nursing in 2002. Dr. Picot was featured in Advancing the Science of Nursing: Research & Scholarship 2000-2002 published by the School of Nursing at the University of Maryland, where she discussed "Promoting Improved Health Outcomes Among Ethnic Caregivers."

Keith O. Plowden, PhD, assistant professor at the University of Maryland has an article in press entitled, "Sociological perspectives of Black American Health Disparity: Implications for Social Policy" which will appear in Policy, Politics & Nursing Practice. Dr. Plowden was featured in Advancing the Science of Nursing: Research & Scholarship 2000-2002 published by the School of Nursing at the University of Maryland, where he discussed "Closing the Gap on Cancer Screening and Treatment for Minorities."

Beverly H. Robinson, PhD, FAAN, associate dean of graduate programs at The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas gave a presentation on "Going `Distance': Distance Education in Graduate Education." One of her doctoral students, Martina Gallagher, MSN, RN, presented, "Slings and Arrows of Doctoral Distance Education."

Bess Stewart, PhD, FAAN, immediate past president of ABNF, has been appointed associate dean of students in the School of Nursing at The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Stewart gave a presentation entitled, "Intellectual Properties of Technology and its Impact on Scholarship" at the 14th Annual Meeting & Scientific Conference of ABNF.
