WEDNESDAY JULY 13

A01 Round Table Learning: A Hands-On Course

Love your profession? Join in this very successful learning experience offered at major dental meetings around the country. Share your enthusiasm while you learn in this hands-on small group experience. Enjoy the opportunity to trade ideas with other dental assistants in your group while you are introduced to new products and techniques that will benefit your practice. You will come away energized with new ideas and lots of product samples for your office.

Jen Blake is the Director of Education and Professional Relations for the American Dental Assistants Association. Jen's career as a dental assistant has included private practice chairside assisting, teaching dental students how to work with expanded duff assistants, program administration for an ADA accredited dental assisting program and guest lecturing nationwide. She is a past national president of the ADAA.

THURSDAY JULY 14

A02 Oral Complications of Cancer Therapies: Diagnosis, Prevention and Treatment

Lecture Credit Hours: 3 Susan E. Calderbank, DMD

Time: 1:30 PM-4:30 PM

Every three minutes, someone is diagnosed with cancer. Is your office prepared to handle the needs of these patients? Oral complications resulting from anticancer therapies can significantly affect morbidity, patient tolerance of treatment options and quality of life. Dr. Calderbank will discuss radiation caries, salivary gland dysfunction, mucositis, and treatment rinses.

OTHER TOPICS INCLUDE:

> Bacterial, fungal and viral infections.

> Analyzing blood studies.

> Timing extractions and dental care.

Dr. Calderbank is an associate instructor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine and maintains a private practice in Greenville, Pa. She holds fellowships in the Pierre Fauchard Society, the International College of Dentists and the American College of Dentists. An examiner for the Northeast Board of Dental Examiners, in 2003 Dr Calderbank received the Pennsylvania Dental Association's Special Public &trice Award in recognition of her commitment to raising awareness of the Oral Complications of Cancer Therapies.

A03 Infection Control is a Journey--Let OSAP Be Your Guide

Back by popular demand, dentistry's resource for infection control and safety, OSAP, will take dental assistants on a whistle-stop tour of critical issues. Attendees will travel through four learning stations.

TOPICS INCLUDE:

> Proper selection and use of surface disinfectants and barriers.

> Assuring sterile instruments are always provided chairside.

> Proper selection and use of personal protective equipment.

> Improving and maintaining compliance in the office.

A04 Fighting Plaque with a Healthy Back (Preventing Work-Related Pain in Dental Assisting)

Lecture Credit Hours: 3 Bethany Valachi, MS, PT, CEAS

Time: 1:30 PM-4:30 PM

Dental assistants face a unique set of musculoskeletal challenges when delivering dental care that can result in pain, injury or a career-ending disability. Developed by a physical therapist and clinical dentist, this dynamic seminar includes, but goes far beyond, dental ergonomics. A fusion of biomechanics, physiology, physical therapy and dental ergonomics--this one-of-a-kind course is as scientific as it is fun and immediately applicable. Assistants will learn numerous strategies in the operatory to prevent and reduce work-related pain. This is an important course for all dental assistants concerned with their musculoskeletal health and career longevity.

Ms. Valachi is a physical therapist, certified ergonomics assessment specialist and co-founder of Posturedontics[R] with Keith Valachi DDS. She has published in many dental journals including JADA and is author of ADAA's home study course The Ergonomics of Dental Assisting.

SATURDAY JULY 16

A05 Women Working with Women

Lecture Credit Hours: 3 Linda L. Miles, CSP, CMC

Time: 8:00 AM-11:00 AM

Knowing the five basic components to promoting trust and creating a supportive environment is key to feeling comfortable approaching others, learning new things and working efficiently as a team. These issues are imperative to improving the communication within your professional and personal environments. Both male and female dentists and assistants are encouraged to attend, as these issues are pertinent to every dental practice and will provide easy-to-implement ideas to improve loyalty, staff harmony and patient retention!
