A community service program of dental care for needy children in two NC counties concluded during DARW. Western Piedmont's 20 dental assisting students were joined by hygiene students, county health departments and local dentists to provide care for 100 children.

YORK TECHNICAL COLLEGE
Rock Hill, SC

Career presentations and oral health care demonstrations were provided by York's d.a. students at local schools and a college health fair. At a luncheon for students hosted by faculty, a proclamation from the Governor was read and everyone received a rose and a pen.

COMFORT DENTISTRY (BUSINESS ASSISTANTS)

Oral hygiene presentations were made by the business team of this practice to primary schools in the area. Brushing, flossing and toothbrush care were presented as well as instructions on how to give the d.a. cheer: "Dental Assistants are the Best!"

FIRST PLACE
7TH DENTAL SQUADRON
Wright Patterson Air Force Base, OH

7th Dental Squadron kicked off the week with a complimentary breakfast for the entire dental staff at which a proclamation from the Governor of Ohio was presented and a letter of congratulations from the Air Force Assistant Surgeon General for Dental Services. A bowling party was held, a pot luck lunch and a continuing education presentation given. $350 worth of door prizes were awarded to the dental staff and two ADAA memberships were paid. Daily information booths at the base medical center were staffed covering all aspects of dental assisting and over 800 toothbrush and toothpaste kits were distributed.

UNIVERSITY PARK ENDODONTICS

The staff of this dental office was honored on a day by day basis: Monday: complimentary breakfast; Tuesday: Balloons and candy; Wednesday: Lunch; Thursday: Cookie bears decorated as clinical assistants (with masks) or coordinators; Friday: lunch, massage and facial at a local day spa. (the certificate for this was presented on Friday with the event on Saturday. Its announcement well in advance added to the anticipation.

HONORABLE MENTION
55TH DENTAL SQUADRON
Offutt AFB, NE
Presented by Sr. M/Sgt Randy J. Voigtschild

Electronic recognition on the entrance marquee at Offutt AFB told everyone it was DARW and staff t-shirts advertised who was involved. An article in the base paper completed the coverage. During the week, a dinner and luncheon were held as well as a bowling party which included spouses. Dinner entertainment included the "Dentist/Assistant Game" a variation on the newlywed game.

BRANCH DENTAL CLINIC
Naval Station Everett, WA

Banners with photos of dental assistants were placed in the waiting rooms and a DARW notice adorned the window of the clinic and operatory entrances. A pizza luncheon was held and one evening a cake was presented. Bravo Zulu Awards (attaboys to civilians) were also made for special past efforts and results.
