Welcome back, Khadr

Catholic New Times, June 6, 2004 by Peggy Flanagan

I can understand the anger that is being expressed toward the Khadr family. How is it that people who espouse views contrary to the fundamental ethics of Canada were made citizens to begin with? Then, after they wiped the dust from their feet and left Canada, they had the nerve to return in order to blatantly use our healthcare system and abuse our hospitality. They must be an embarrassment to the many Moslem Canadians who are grateful to be a responsible part of this country.

My heart goes out to the young injured boy who is a product of the indoctrination of his parents. If we reject him, he will continue to hate all things Canadian. If we swallow our pride and help him perhaps we will have turned an enemy into a friend and loyal citizen of this country. It takes time to be transplanted. It may be too late for the older generation of the Khadr family to become rooted in Canadian soil, but perhaps the younger family members will learn to blossom and bear fruit here.
