Racism alive in Canada, reader says

Catholic New Times, Oct 10, 2004 by Joan Munson

We Canadians pride ourselves on our acceptance of African American slaves into our country when they escaped via the underground railroad. At least I did.

I learned about Africville (CNT June 6, 2004) some years back; on a documentary on CBC TV. To learn once more of our bad treatment of poor refugees shocks and shames me as a Canadian. What I had remembered was not the reality suffered by these people but that we had given them aid. I am saddened to see how selective a memory can be. I am also ashamed that we do this to people. We need to wake up.

And then there is our 'revered' Don Cherry. I will say it again. Racism is alive and thriving in our beloved Canada.

Please, just keep telling us the truth.
