They said it!
Catholic New Times, Nov 2, 2003
And in California ,great transgressions were committed by Maria Shriver and, at the end of the Schwarzenegger campaign, by her mother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver. The two were charged with attempted breaking and stealing the hearts of so many who for so many years have carried candles in their hearts of John Kennedy and Robert Kennedy--in the last years, mostly Robert--and here you have two of the family selling out a piece of their souls.
--Jimmy Breslin, October 7, in Newsday
How is it possible that a young woman can carry out such an awful suicide bombing? The only possible answer is that she was driven by an utter lack of hope, that the result of 36 years of occupation is this utter lack of hope for a better life, freedom, self-respect--in short, all of the things that all of us hope for and expect. We have turned the lives of women and children into hell, but we are shocked, enraged and demand retribution when the people who are the products of our occupation take action against us.
--Dan Goldenblatt, Israeli refusenik in Toronto Star Oct. 9
On May 1, 2003 off the coast of California, president George W. Bush landed in flying gear on the deck of the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln which sported a banner reading "mission accomplished" and said, "Major combat operations in Iraq have ended." The war, said Bush, had been carried out "with a combination of precision and speed and boldness the enemy did not expect, and the world had not seen before."
--William Greider
There's global competition and there's no more lifetime job security. You have to be a rugged individualist. Consider yourself president of Me Inc., your own personal services company, your human capital, and your knowledge base.... You are your own brand and you must market it the way they sell toothpaste.
--Sherry Cooper, Global Economic Strategist & Executive Vice President, BMO Financial Group" in the Globe and Mail's Report on Business, Oct 4, the feast of Francis of Assisi.
We are reluctant to explore the kingdom within us, that spiritual space that is the counterpart of the fathomless space of the universe. Institutions resist mightily because their inner structure, their organizational essence, is threatened in a universe in which hierarchical configurations no longer match or support human experience ... Hierarchies are doomed in every range of endeavor, and why new religious forms must grow organically around this seminal understanding in the coming decades.
--Eugene Kennedy in Tomorrow's Catholics
You would think that if Mary could carry the person of Jesus in her body, that a woman could carry the message of Jesus on her lips.
--William Sloane Coffin, Yale University
It could be pretty much anybody who has money that they'd like to share. We'd like two or three major sponsors, probably at $5000.
--Bride-to-be Bernadette Navarro, Barrie, Ont., who is looking for corporate sponsors for her wedding
