STOCKHOLM -- To worldwide rejoicing ,the winner of the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize was announced October 9.
Shirin Ebadi, an Iranian lawyer and activist for women and children, was awarded the prize from the Swedish Institute, who cited her furthering of democracy within Islam.
Ebadi, who has been harassed by Iran's militant and fundamentalist government and spent some weeks in prison, won the award over two other nominees, President George W. Bush and Pope John Paul II.
