Somerville honoured along with Regehr

OTTAWA (CCN) -- The first woman and Catholic to become general secretary of the Canadian Council of Churches, is among 102 new appointments to the Order of Canada announced by Governor General Adrienne Clarkson Jan. 27.

Janet Somerville, a former associate editor of the Catholic New Times from 1990-97, was described in her citation as "a gracious yet forceful leader" and one who "helped create a model of ecumenism admired worldwide and continues to be a strong voice on global social issues."

It also said that for decades Somerville has been advocate for interfaith understanding, human rights and peace. "Whether as a journalist, activist or teacher, she has provided a consistent example of faith in action," said the citation. She was named as a Member of the Order of Canada.

Appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada was Ernie Regehr, the executive director and co-founder of Project Ploughshares, based in Waterloo, Ont. "His is one of Canada's most prominent and respected voices on international disarmament and peace," said his citation. Regehr is known for his sound judgment, balanced views and integrity, it ,said.

"Canadian and foreign governments as well as the United Nations call upon him as an expert on disarmament. Organizations such as the World Council of Churches, the Canadian Council for International Cooperation and the Africa Peace Forum also benefit from his knowledge and insight," said the citation. "A dedicated humanitarian, he has made a significant contribution to Canada's international reputation as a leader in peacemaking."

The new appointees include five Companions, 33 Officers and 64 Members of the Order of Canada.
