Kutty not helpful

Catholic New Times, April 9, 2006 by Bert Monster

Faisal Kutty (CNT, March 19) has wiitten quite extensively on the recent furor involving the Danish cartoons. Furthermore he will be hosting a discussion at Osgoode Hall on that very controversial subject. It appears that the aim(s) of the discussion is to determine whether the offensive cartoons must be considered as either a "Political Provocation" or "Freedom of Speech."

May I suggest that in the interest of greater inter-religious understanding and compassion that this issue be addressed under a less aggressive and divisive platform?

The real issue is anything but a matter of freedom of speech. Nor can it truthfully be considered a political provocation. Arguably there are many people who are prepared to argue the question limited to these two issues. It is doubtful however that a discussion under such an inflammatory and provocative banner will lead to greater understanding among the world religions.

Please note my letter to the editor (CNT, March 5). Resolve of this delicate matter can only be found when it is brought to the level of the heart.
