Archbishops decry feminism

Catholic New Times, May 9, 2004

Recent homilies by American bishops have linked feminism to evil.

In Boston during Easter week, Archbishop Sean O'Malley identified feminism as one of the secular evils that are making the United States a "hostile, alien environment for Catholics". It was lumped in with the drug culture, the sexual revolution, hedonism and consumerism.

In Atlanta, Archbishop John Donoghue banned women from participating in the traditional Holy Thursday washing of the feet of the disciples.

In response, Eileen McNamara, in the Boston Globe wrote that "the prospect of female power is so threatening the Vatican has said it will limit the use of girls as altar servers. O'Malley has a contempt for feminism and a veneration for obedience"

McNamara said "it does not become a thoughtful religious leader."
