National Voter, Jan-Feb, 2004

Celebrate 84 years of League achievements and chart the course for the next biennium of League programs at our 46th national Convention on June 12-15, 2004, at the Hilton Washington.

The Convention Preview, with detailed information and Convention and hotel registration forms, has been mailed to every League. All League members are invited to attend Convention, but Presidents of local, state and ILO Leagues will appoint their allotted delegates. Non-voting members can share the excitement as the Convention delegate body debates and adopts the 2004-2006 National Program, the LWVUS Budget for the next fiscal year and amendments to the Bylaws, and elects National Board members and directors for the next biennium. League members may use the Convention registration form on the opposite page or register online for both Convention 2004 and the Convention hotel at www.lwv.org (go to the Members section to access the Convention site). The complete Convention Preview is also online or available from Natalie Testa (202-263-1314;ntesta@lwv.org).

In cooperation with the Pew Partnership for Civic Change, LWVUS will offer a leadership training session on Friday, June 11, the day before the official start of Convention 2004 (see News from M Street, page 4 for details). On Monday afternoon, there will be workshops on topics including Membership, Development, Communications, Advocacy and Judicial Independence.

Caucuses are meetings arranged, planned and conducted by delegates to discuss issues. If your League would like to reserve a caucus room in advance and have your caucus listed in the convention program, contact Natalie Testa before April 15, 2004. Caucuses will be assigned on a space-available-basis; remaining space may be requested when you arrive. Tim local arrangements committee for Convention 2004 is sponsoring a Dine Around evening on Saturday, June 12. A variety of menus and prices will be available. Sign up at the Information Desk in the Registration area for an evening of delectable cuisine at one of Washington's potpourri of excellent eating establishments.

If you want a taste of the flip side of polities, be sure to join the LWV of the National Capital Area when they present the Capitol Steps on Sunday evening. This group of former congressional staffers has been delighting audiences across the country since 1981 with their view of life in the nation's Capital. Since this is a presidential election year, they will have an abundance of candidates to satirize, ensuring an evening of delicious fun.

The League banquet is scheduled for Monday evening. The cost of the banquet is included in the Convention registration fee. If you would like to purchase additional banquet tickets @$55.00, you may do so at the Convention Registration desk.

The Convention site, the Hilton Washington, combines the amenities of a grand hotel and a pleasant resort, with seven acres of colorful gardens, sparkling pools and a complete health club. Plan to arrive early or spend a few extra days in America's Capital City!
