MacWeek, March 16, 1998 by David Morgenstern
The Verbatim CD-RW drive is based on a Mitsubishi Chemical mechanism with a 1-Mbyte buffer. The Fast SCSI-2 drive provides double write speeds to CD-Recordable and CD-RW media and a 6x read rate, Verbatim said.
The drive firmware supports random packet rewriting via its support for Universal Disk Format. Verbatim said it also supports several CD formats, including CD-DA, CD-ROM, CD-XA, CD-Extra, CD-Interactive and Photo CD.
Verbatim offers the drive with a software package that includes Adaptec Inc.'s Toast Pro 3.5.3 authoring software for the Mac and Adaptec's tools for Intel-standard PC systems. The drives ship with five CD-R discs and a single piece of CD-RW media. The external model with the authoring bundle costs $599; without the software the drive it is $529. An internal model, also priced at $529, is offered just with the software bundle.
