Web tool writes in XML

MacWeek, Jan 19, 1998 by Andrea Dudrow

Media Design In*Progress this month introduced XPublish, a Web authoring tool

based on Extensible Markup Language, an emerging standard for describing con-

tent on the Web.

XML is currently under review by the World Wide Web Consortium (WC3) and is

expected to be released as an official standard this month (see 12.15.97, Page

20).

XPublish is aimed at developers of medium- to large-sized Web sites. The

software writes Web pages in XML, which it converts to HTML for publication on

the Internet. Media Design said this approach to Web publishing allows com-

panies to write content once and publish it any number of times without using

a full Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) publishing system. XML is

based on SGML.

XPublish includes Media Design's cascading style sheets editor, Cascade. The

company said this will help Web designers apply a consistent appearance to all

pages in a Web site.

Media Design said XPublish includes many features of Interaction, the com-

pany's Web authoring and conferencing package.

The company said XPublish will ship this month and cost about $249.
