Solutions: Macy's West ads arrive via PDF

Eighty percent of all Macy's West's printing work is direct-to-plate. However,

"one requires TIFF/IT, another requires encapsulated PostScript," Jacobson

said. "I think the printers are coming along, too, but the printers are

waiting to see what their customers want to do, and their customers are

saying, 'We don't know how to use this technology. We want some help.' "

Jacobson said he doesn't expect trouble with the larger printing companies.

The potential difficulty, he said, is with smaller printers who have not

embraced PDF or direct-to-plate technology. "We've essentially told them we're

getting out of thefilm business," he said. "We're moving forward with the

technology, and we'd like them to join us."
