Systems: Hardware Research puts Macs in racks

MacWeek, March 2, 1998 by David Morgenstern

Mac systems newcomer Hardware Research Inc. last week rolled out several lines

of rackmounted Macs aimed at professional audio and video production.

The company equips its HR Rackmounted systems with the PowerPC 750, also

called G3, and with single or dual PowerPC 604e processors. All of its models

are based on UMAX Computer Corp.'s Tsunami logic board design.

The G3 systems cost $6,249 or $6,850, respectively, for versions furnished

with either a 250- or 275-MHz processor. Each G3 model comes standard with a

512-Kbyte Level 2 cache running at half the processor speed, 128 Mbytes of

RAM, a 6-Gbyte hard drive and a 24x CD-ROM mechanism.

Hardware Research's 604e-based, uniprocessor Rackmounted systems each come

with 512 Kbytes of cache, a 3-Gbyte drive and a 24x CD-ROM. The models offered

with 64 Mbytes of RAM cost $4,400 and $4,550, respectively, for versions with

a 233- or 250-MHz processor. The configurations that include 128 Mbytes of RAM

are priced at $4,550 and $4,999, respectively.

Multiprocessor models include the $5,400 Rackmounted 604e/466MhzDP, which runs

a pair of 233-MHz processors, and the $5,700 604e/500MhzDP, which offers dual

250-MHz 604e chips. Each system ships with 64 Mbytes of RAM, a 512-Kbyte

cache, a 4-Gbyte hard drive and a 24x CD-ROM.

Hardware Research said it also offers rackmount enclosures for a variety of

Macintosh systems, including the Power Mac 7100, 7500, 8100, 8500, 8600, 9500

and 9600; the Centris 650; and the Quadra 800, 840, 900 and 950 models. The

kits range from $500 to $725.
