Allergy-proof your furniture: allergens can hide in your sofa and armchair. Here's how to care for your furniture so you can breathe easy - Home and Family - Brief Article

Natural Health, April, 2003

YOUR FURNITURE IS A HAVEN FOR allergens like dust mites and pet dander. Here's how to make your furniture less hospitable to them.

To reduce allergy-promoting dust and dander buildup, wipe wood surfaces frequently with a damp cloth; for deep cleaning, occasionally rub in a mixture of extra-virgin olive oil and lemon juice (2 tablespoons each) with a soft cotton cloth. Clean nonwood surfaces regularly with a hypoallergenic cleaner like Seventh Generation Natural All Purpose Cleaner ($4.69 for a 32-ounce bottle; 800-456-1191; www.seventhgeneration.com).

To prevent allergens from accumulating in fabric, vacuum fabric-covered furniture at least once a month using a HEPA-filtered vacuum (available in most home goods stores). Twice a year, deep-clean your cushions: Remove cushions from their covers and place them in a plastic bag; seal the bag's opening around the vacuum hose nozzle with your hand, tear a 1-inch airflow hole in the bag's bottom, and run the vacuum for one minute while beating the cushions. Wash the cushion covers before putting them back on.
