Banish the blahs: lighten up and get moving with triphala, the ayurvedic choice for kicking that cold-weather heavy feeling

Natural Health, March, 2005 by Scott Blossom

OUR BODIES and minds are attuned to seasonal changes, according to Ayurveda. Failing to harmonize with nature's rhythms at this time of year contributes to springtime conditions like allergies, colds, retention of winter weight gain, lethargy, and emotional "stuckness." Practitioners recommend a daily dose of triphala to help you gradually lighten up physically, mentally, and emotionally (see "Spring Into Action With Ayruveda," above, for other ideas).

While little Western research exists on triphala, it has been one of the most revered and widely used compounds in Ayurveda for rejuvenating and cleansing the whole body. Literally translating as "three fruits," triphala is practically a food--it's very high in natural vitamin C and bioflavonoids, and it has a mild laxative, diuretic, and bowel-toning effect. In India it is regarded as a panacea of sorts. As ayurvedic doctor Robert Svoboda jokes, "It will balance everything but your checkbook."

Most of all, consistent use of triphala is excellent for improving elimination patterns. Establishing regularity is a critical factor for maintaining overall health. While other laxatives such as senna, cascara sagrada, rhubarb, or bulking agents such as psillium husks are effective, they may create dependence or be too harsh for long-term use. Gentle triphala, on the other hand, is said to work by strengthening the tissues of the gastrointestinal tract so they function better on their own.

DOSAGE

Steep 1/2 teaspoon in hot water for 10 minutes or take two capsules an hour before bed or first thing in the morning. If you like, increase to 1 teaspoon or three capsules after one week. For a stronger laxative, take triphala with 2 ounces (increasing to as much as 8 ounces) of aloe vera juice. You can use triphala for up to six months at a time.

Spring Into Action With Ayurveda

As winter passes, nature emerges from its hibernation toward the warmth and activity of spring, and--according to Ayurveda--so should you! Here's how:

* Reduce or eliminate dairy products, fried or oily foods, processed or pre-packaged foods, iced or cold foods or drinks, sweets, alcohol, and coffee.

* Organize your home and office.

* Drink 6 to 8 cups of purified water a day.

* Offer gratitude and reverence for the beauty of nature.

* Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.

* Resolve lingering relationship issues.

* Get ample cardiovascular exercise.
