Rainy-day savings

Natural Health, March, 2006 by Amy Allison

Even on a bright, sunny day, you can treat your garden to a drink direct from Mother Nature with [H.sub.2]O harvested from your resident rain barrel. Set under downspouts to capture and collect rainwater from rooftops, these receptacles reduce pollution-causing runoff and provide water economy for people and the planet: The Environmental Protection Agency estimates a rain barrel will save most homeowners about 1,300 gallons during the peak summer months.

Ready-made barrels, which hold from 50 to 80 gallons, cost between $80 and $200 (try urbangardencenter.com); your local water utility may offer a rebate or discount. When ordering, look for a food-grade container, firmly mounted fittings including spigots and drain valves, and a secure lid with mesh screening to filter out bugs and debris.
