Great food tips - Letter to the Editor

Natural Health, July, 2002

A friend gave me a copy of your magazine (March 2002) and I was delighted. Under "Foods that Give Your Skin a Glow" in the Consumer Guide ("50 Foods to Help You Look and Feel Great"), you mention that milk may be a culprit in skin blemishes due to the iodine used to clean milking machines. Every time I eat ice cream it triggers acne on my face. If I avoid milk products, my skin is completely clear. Thanks for keeping us healthy and on track.

I just returned from my local grocery store where I bought several of the foods that were recommended in your March 2002 Consumer Guide. I got barley, beet greens, and Kashi cereal, as well as the ingredients to make the Quinoa, Tofu, and Dulse Salad ("5 Great Grains and 5 Great Recipes"). As a professional dietitian with a hunger for healthy food and a thirst for nutritional knowledge, I am always eager to improve the food intake for myself, my family, and my patients. Optimal health begins with our diet. I can't wait to start cooking.

A tip in your March 2002 Consumer Guide stumped me. It suggests that we look for breakfast cereals containing at least 6 g of fiber per serving. None of the cereals in my cupboard contains more than 4 g of fiber. I checked out a few packages at the market, but still came up empty. Can you provide a few suggestions?

Editor's Note: Kashi GoLEAN cereal contains to 10 g of fiber per 3/4 cup, Barbara's Bakery Organic GrainShop has 8 g of fiber per 2/3 cup, and All-Bran from Kellogg's offers 10 g per 1/2 cup. These cereals are available at most supermarkets and natural food stores.
