What we can learn from Italians - Letters to the Editor - Letter to the Editor

Natural Health, July, 2003 by Claudio Fratarcangeli

It was refreshing to finally see an article on the allergy epidemic ("Why Are We So Allergic?" March 2003). One possible cause that was not mentioned is childhood vaccination. It seems very plausible that tampering with the immune system at such a vulnerable time might have some long-term negative consequences. (My guess is that as the use of vaccinations has increased there has probably been a surge in all types of immune-related disorders such as arthritis, chronic fatigue, and fibromyalgia.) I am a first-generation American and none of my cousins or relatives who live in Italy have allergies. On the other hand, I and a number of my cousins who grew up in the United States have severe allergies. Italy does not vaccinate nearly as many children as the United States does. Italian growers use fewer chemicals, and people in Italy tend to take showers less often than Americans do.
