Homegrown hair care: the secret to stronger, shinier, hydrated hair can be found in these new ingredients—all so beneficial that only nature could have created them

Natural Health, May, 2004

TO MOISTURIZE

Essential fatty acids (EFAs) act as humectants, attracting and trapping moisture when applied topically to the hair. Meadowfoam-seed oil, found in Neutrogena's Triple Moisture Daily Deep Conditioner ($6; at drugstores), is rich in eicosenoic acid, a potent EFA. Another EFA-rich ingredient: palm-nut oil, found in Ojon's Restorative Hair Treatment ($55; ojonhaircare.com).

TO STRENGTHEN

Bamboo, considered to be the strongest plant in nature, is now being added to shampoos and conditioners. Aeto Bamboo & Yucca Fortifying Shampoo ($2.4; 800-233-6695) contains an extract from the bamboo cane that's loaded with amino acids, the building blocks of protein that make up the bulk of the hair follicle. Amino acids and other nutrients work to decrease split ends.

TO ENHANCE SHINE

Camellia oil, an extract of black tea leaves, contains significant amounts of oleic acid, another beneficial EFA that helps boost hair's shine. You'll find camellia oil in Aveda Control Granules Hair Texturizer ($29; aveda.com), which is also rich in marshmallow root and organic flaxseed--both provide natural holding power in this must-have for all hair types.
