Age well: my mom's secrets for a long and happy life work, if you apply them judiciously

Natural Health, June, 2008 by Mary Bolster

MY MOM turns 80 this year, and as she approaches this milestone, I find myself pondering her longevity secrets. Apart from her good health, she's had a great attitude, always open to new experiences. I've compiled a list of a few things she's done and extrapolated some life lessons. For other anti-aging advice, see "Age-Proof Your Life" on page 70.

* HAVE 14 KIDS Don't really go out and have 14 kids like my mom did. But pursue what you want to with gusto. If you believe in it, you'll hang in there even when things feel overwhelming.

* DO A TRIATHLON AT AGE 59 After years of competing as a Masters swimmer, my mom switched to triathlons in her late 50s and entered a whole new world. Tackling new things challenges your brain, your body, and your assumptions in positive ways.

* MAKE NEW FRIENDS Curious and energetic, my mom continues to befriend people of all ages. New and eclectic relationships keep you young and engaged. They help you stay open minded and supple in the face of life's changes.

* SUPPORT YOUR FAMILY My mom values family above all else, which means she's had to make some difficult accommodations at times. The hard work of understanding, forgiving, and loving your family is worth it when they're around to celebrate your important milestones. At her party this year, I know my mom will agree.
