One-on-One, Walk & Run youth fitness program: getting started

Running & FitNews, July-August, 2003

In March, the American Running Association (ARA) announced its effort to focus on the fitness of America's youth with the new "One-on-One, Walk & Run" program. The key element in the physical activity program is the American Running 12-week Walk/Run schedule, which guides participants--both young and old--to safely and effectively increase their fitness levels.

Our goals are simple and basic: To encourage members and friends of ARA to start "Walk & Run" groups across the country and to celebrate your participation. In the near future, we plan to hold "Walk & Run" events to acknowledge your success and encourage more kids to get active.

In the interim, here are some suggestions to help you get started:

* Form a small group (start with two adults and two kids) in your neighborhood to walk and run using the 12-week Run/Walk program.

* Become a charter "Walk & Run" group for $30. You will receive:

--Two "One-on-One" t-shirts (one adult size and one youth size)

--12-week Run/Walk training program cards for everyone in your group

* Network with other charter groups participating in the program through the American Running web site (contact us at run@americanrunning.org to set this up).

Future plans for the ARA "One-on-One, Walk & Run" program include a youth section on the ARA web site with fun interactive tools to track your progress, free gear for kids from sponsors and partners, completion patches for each participant, an online apparel store, clinics, and special events in selected communities.

To register for the "One-on-One, Walk & Run" program and to receive your t-shirts and training plan, go to www.americanrunning.org and click on the "One-on-One" icon. Questions? Call us at 800-776-2732.
