Battling athlete's foot

Running & FitNews, Sept-Oct, 2003

? I have been waging war against athlete's foot for quite some time. What is the best way to disinfect socks and towels to reduce the risk of transmitting spores? I keep reinfecting myself over and over. I treat the areas between the toes with oxiconazole nitrate cream, I wash vigorously to remove loose skin cells, and I even use separate foot towels to dry off. I wear sandals whenever possible for better ventilation, and wash the towels and my socks in extremely hot water with bleach.

Tinea pedis is one of the most common conditions I see. The fungus likes moist, warm, dark areas. It is quite difficult to cure because the fungus is ubiquitous: locker room shower floors, carpets, pools and other places are all infected. Keep your feet dry and not warm. Coolmax socks can help you do this. Wearing sandals is a good idea; always wear them in the locker room and showers as well. Fastidious washing and cleaning is not likely to completely rid you of this hearty fungus.

There really is no escape from the fungus for people with low immunity to it. However, wearing a different pair of shoes each day may help, so that the shoes can dry out before you next use them. Fungus powder should be used during the day, and at night continue to use the cream as indicated. You can try putting the powder inside your shoes as well as in between your toes. You may also consult a dermatologist in your area.

I like the anti-fungal cream clotrimazole. Also, make sure you change out of your workout shoes and socks as soon as possible.
