Drug Cost Management Report, July, 2002

* Roche's prescription weight-loss drug Xenical[R] (orlistat) has proven effective in helping to control diabetes. The drug helps control blood glucose and reduces insulin resistance in patients with type 2 diabetes, according to the results of three studies presented at a meeting of the American Diabetes Association.

"This collection of data provides strong support for the use of Xenical plus diet in conjunction with diabetes treatments in overweight or obese patients with type 2 diabetes," said Dr. Jaime Davidson, an endocrinologist at Medical City Dallas Hospital and clinical associate professor of medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, who presented one of the studies.
